Concrete Repair & Concrete Cancer
Concrete cancer, much like cancer in the body, spreads and causes significant damage if not treated. Key signs include chipping, spalling, cracking, and rust stains. These issues often stem from prolonged corrosion of reinforced steel due to oxygen and moisture penetration, leading to severe structural problems.
What’s Concrete Cancer
Concrete spalling, or cancer, is the deterioration of a concrete structure caused by the corrosion of the steel reinforcement within it.
Causes of Spalling
Carbonation
Exposure to airborne chemicals leads to carbonation, causing the steel reinforcement within concrete to rust. As the steel rusts, it expands, leading to cracking and flaking of the surrounding concrete.
Moisture
Water penetration through concrete cracks causes the steel reinforcement to rust and expand, increasing in volume by up to seven times. This expansion forces the surrounding concrete to deteriorate and flake off.
Efflorescence
Moisture ingress results in efflorescence, a white mineral salt deposit on concrete surfaces. This reduces the concrete’s alkalinity, causing the internal steel reinforcement to corrode, leading to spalling.
Salt Ingress
Concrete’s porous nature allows chloride ions from coastal air to penetrate, forming rust nodules on the steel reinforcement. These rust nodules create internal stresses, resulting in cracks and spalling of the concrete.
Treatment process
Polymer Modified Rectification System
Removes damaged concrete, cleans steel, and applies a protective coating.
Concrete Rectification with Electrochemical Treatment
Best for properties near water, this process removes chloride-contaminated concrete and applies corrosion-resistant coatings and a cathodic system.
Epoxy Crack Injection
Revitalize damaged concrete with advanced epoxy delivery systems, using low-pressure injection and balloon techniques to restore its original strength.
